If each of the 120,000 staff members working in the NSW Department of Education and Communities gave just $2 a fortnight we would raise $6.8 million a year to help students, teachers and parents in our public schools. Education has the power to change lives, together we can make a big difference to the lives of children and families we serve.

Workplace Giving Frequently Asked Questions

The Public Education Foundation is the only education philanthropy in Australia solely dedicated to supporting public education.

Workplace Giving is a simple, tax-effective way to make regular donations directly from your pay. It allows you to reduce the amount of tax you pay because donations to the Public Education Foundation are fully tax deductible.

The Department of Education and Communities allows its employees to donate to the Public Education Foundation automatically though payroll on a regular basis.

Workplace Giving benefits the Public Education Foundation as it allows us to plan our scholarship program in advance because we know how much funding we will receive each month.

Workplace giving also allows you to make a real difference to the lives of students and public school communities by giving affordable amounts each pay cycle. Here’s an example of how a small donation can make a huge difference:*

$10 per pay – Basic scholarship package for a student, covers educational expenses such as text books, elective course fees, technology assistance, and internet access.

$20 per pay – Provides a ‘Friends of Zainab’ Tertiary Scholarship for one year – financial support for a student from a refugee background for education expenses during the early years of university or alternative tertiary education.

$30 per pay – Supports, through the Pinpoint Scholarship, a year 8 or 9 student who faces financial hardship and/or other challenges through the crucial middle years of high school with one on one mentoring, tuition, and other mutually determined educational expenses.

$50 per pay – Supports, through the Walter and Eliza Hall Trust Opportunity Scholarship, a student with a disability to transition to university through the purchase of capital equipment, relocation costs and other educational expenses.

*Figures are based on fortnightly pay cycles over a five year period.

All of your donation will go to the Public Education Foundation to help support students, teachers and parents in our public school communities.

***All DEC employees who are permanent or temporary can join the program. Unfortunately, casual employees cannot join the program.

You can choose to set a recurring donation or make a single one-off donation using your credit card (link to Givenow General fund). Contact the Public Education Foundation directly at info@publiceducationfoundation.org.au or by phone on 02 9266 8681 if you would like to make a one-off or recurring Electronic Funds Transfer into our account.

This can continue, you are able to donate to more than one charity.

Simply complete the online form and the Public Education Foundation will forward your details to your payroll team to process.

The minimum donation is $2.00 a fortnight. Donations must be $2.00 or more to be tax deductible. There is no maximum amount that can be donated, provided the amount does not exceed your pay for the period.

The program operates through the department’s payroll system so deductions can only be made in line with pay periods.

Yes, you can. Click here to make a one-off donation to support our work.

All donations to the Public Education Foundation are tax deductible. However if only a small amount is donated and depending on the tax bracket which is applied, you may not get a tax benefit until you claim your donations through your tax return.

If you are corporate and school staff you will need to submit your annual receipt when you submit your tax return at the end of the financial year.

Yes, every employee who donates to charities holding Deductible Gift Recipient status through their payroll must list the total amount of donations in their tax return so the source of the deductions is clear to the Tax Office.

Payroll will let every employee know how much they have donated to charity through their pay at the end of the financial year. This will be in written form or printed on the annual payment summary.

Your gross income will not change as a result of a workplace giving deduction. This is different to salary sacrifice where the gross income is changed by the amount sacrificed.

The workplace giving deduction has to be added back on to your gross salary at the end of the financial year for the payment summary and it is also reported as a deduction. Your payroll team will do this when they issue your payment summary.

If you are a corporate or school staff member contact your employee services office to advise of the changes you would like to make. If you belong to a TAFE Institute or the Office of Communities you can make adjustments in the ESS system yourself.

If you would like to set up a Workplace Giving scheme where you work, email the Public Education Foundation or phone us on 02 9266 8681. We will be happy to assist.
